🌍 Wings Lesson 3: Describe a recent vs old event

Learn How to Use “WHEREAS” ⚖️

(Comparison Connector)

What “WHEREAS” Does 🎯

Use “whereas” to compare an old situation with a recent one.
It’s used when both situations are true, but they are different. Unlike BUT, it sounds more neutral and less emotional.

Formula:

[Time indicator + Old situation (Past Simple)] + WHEREAS + [Time indicator + Recent situation (Present / Present Continuous / Present Perfect)]

Using WHEREAS (comparison)

“Hey, let me tell you what I was thinking about this morning. Back in 2018, I used to work night shifts at a call center, and it was exhausting. Whereas now, I’m working from home during the day, and I love it. It’s a completely different lifestyle — I have more energy, more time, and I actually enjoy my job.”

Example from a Monologue đź’ˇ

“In 2018 I worked night shifts at a call center, whereas now I work from home during the day.”

  • Old situation (Past Simple): “In 2018 I worked night shifts at a call center.”
  • Connector: WHEREAS → shows comparison between past and present.
  • Recent situation: “Now I work from home during the day.”

Shortcut to Remember 🔑

WHEREAS = Comparison Connector
Use it when you compare two situations — old vs. recent — in a neutral way.
