Learn How to Use âWHEREASâ âïž
(Comparison Connector)
What âWHEREASâ Does đŻ
Use âwhereasâ to compare an old situation with a recent one.
Itâs used when both situations are true, but they are different. Unlike BUT, it sounds more neutral and less emotional.
Formula:
[Time indicator + Old situation (Past Simple)] + WHEREAS + [Time indicator + Recent situation (Present / Present Continuous / Present Perfect)]
Using WHEREAS (comparison)
“Hey, let me tell you what I was thinking about this morning. Back in 2018, I used to work night shifts at a call center, and it was exhausting. Whereas now, Iâm working from home during the day, and I love it. Itâs a completely different lifestyle â I have more energy, more time, and I actually enjoy my job.”
Example from a Monologue đĄ
“In 2018 I worked night shifts at a call center, whereas now I work from home during the day.”
- Old situation (Past Simple): âIn 2018 I worked night shifts at a call center.â
- Connector: WHEREAS â shows comparison between past and present.
- Recent situation: âNow I work from home during the day.â
Shortcut to Remember đ
WHEREAS = Comparison Connector
Use it when you compare two situations â old vs. recent â in a neutral way.
