🌍 Wings Lesson 3: Describe a recent vs old event

Learn How to Use “INSTEAD” 🔄

(Replacement Connector)

What “INSTEAD” Does 🎯

Use “instead” when the recent event replaces what was expected, planned, or wanted in the past.
It shows a change in decision or action.

Formula:

[Time indicator + Old plan or desire (Past Simple)] + INSTEAD + [Time indicator + Recent memory (Present / Present Perfect / Present Continuous)]

Using INSTEAD (alternative)

“Hi guys! I was talking to my cousin yesterday, and I remembered something. Three years ago, I wanted to start my own bakery, but I didn’t have the courage. Instead, these days I’m working as a chef in a restaurant. Honestly, I think it was the right choice — less stress, better pay, and I’m still doing what I love.”

Example đź’ˇ

“Three years ago I planned to open my own bakery, instead I’m working happily as a chef in a restaurant.”

  • Old plan (Past Simple): “Three years ago I planned to open my own bakery.”
  • Connector: INSTEAD → shows the replacement of the original plan.
  • Recent event: “I’m working happily as a chef in a restaurant.”
