The Rule
A or An?
| Article | Next sound | Letters | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Consonant sound | b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z | a book, a pen, a student, a teacher |
| An | Vowel sound | a, e, i, o, u | an apple, an eraser, an orange, an umbrella |
Listen to the sound, not the letter! “An hour” — H is silent, so the first sound is a vowel. “A university” — sounds like “you-niversity” so it starts with a consonant sound. At A1 level, just remember: A/E/I/O/U → AN. Everything else → A.
