Today we learn A and AN. They both mean the same thing — but we use them differently.

[Hold up a book]
A BOOK. B is a consonant sound — so we say A.
A pen. A pencil. A notebook. A bag.

[Hold up an apple]
AN APPLE. A is a vowel sound — so we say AN.
An eraser. An orange. An umbrella.

THE RULE IS SIMPLE:
A — before consonant sounds: b, c, d, f, g, p, r, s, t...
AN — before vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u

[Show examples]
I am A student. — S is a consonant. A student.
She is AN agent. — A is a vowel. An agent.
I have A book and AN eraser in my bag.
