Understanding Present Perfect Affirmative Statements


Formula for Present Perfect Affirmative Statements:

Subject-Verb Agreement:

  • I, you, we, they = Have
  • He, she, it = Has

Examples:

  1. I have finished my homework.
  2. She has visited Paris.
  3. We have seen that movie before.
  4. He has completed the project.

Please try the following exercise:

Instructions: In this exercise, make sure to choose the correct auxiliary verb ("have" or "has") to agree with the subject. Remember:
  • Use "have" with I, you, we, and they.
  • Use "has" with he, she, and it.

Example:

  • I (have / has) finished my homework.
  • She (have / has) completed the assignment.

Present Perfect with Time Expressions: Listen and Repeat:

Time Expressions Used with Present Perfect:
Never, already, just, recently, lately.


Examples:

FORMULA: 

SUBJECT + HAVE / HAS + PAST PARTICIPLE VERB + COMPLEMENT


INSTRUCTIONS: Listen carefully to the sentences and notice where the time expressions (never, already, just, recently, lately) are placed within the present perfect structure. Repeat each sentence, paying close attention to the position of the time expression. Practice until you can confidently use these expressions in the correct place.

FOCUS: SENTENCE STRUCTURE USING TIME EXPRESSIONS

Formula: 

Subject + Have / Has + Past Participle Verb + Complement

    Instructions: Unscramble each sentence to form a correct present perfect sentence. Be careful with the word order, and ensure that the auxiliary verb ("have" or "has") agrees with the subject.

    Example:

    • Scrambled: visited / she / has / Paris
    • Answer: She has visited Paris.

    In pairs, ask each other the following “Have you ever?” questions, then follow up with a question in the simple past based on your partner’s response.
