Factual and Negative Factual Information Questions in TOEFL Reading
These question types are commonly found in the TOEFL Reading Section and test a student’s ability to identify explicitly stated information in a passage.
1. Factual Information Questions
These questions ask about information that is directly stated in the passage.
- They usually focus on main ideas, details, definitions, and explanations.
- The correct answer paraphrases a sentence or idea found in the passage.
- Incorrect answers may include information that is:
- Not stated in the passage
- Distorted in meaning
- Related but too broad or too specific
Example:
According to paragraph 3, why do desert plants have long roots?
A) To absorb water deep underground
B) To store nutrients
C) To attract pollinators
D) To protect against predators
✅ Correct answer: A) To absorb water deep underground
(If explicitly mentioned in the passage)
2. Negative Factual Information Questions
These ask students to identify something that is NOT stated in the passage.
- The wording usually includes except or NOT
- Three answer choices will be true based on the passage.
- One answer choice will be false, not mentioned, or contradict the passage.
Example:
According to paragraph 5, which of the following is NOT true about the formation of glaciers?
A) They form in areas with heavy snowfall.
B) They are created by the freezing of ocean water.
C) They can take thousands of years to develop.
D) They move slowly due to their weight.
✅ Correct answer: B) They are created by the freezing of ocean water.
(If the passage does not state this or states the opposite)
Common Strategies for Answering These Questions
- Skim the Passage
- Find the section related to the question before reading the answer choices.
- Eliminate Wrong Answers
- For factual questions, eliminate choices not stated or distorted.
- For negative factual questions, eliminate three true statements.
- Look for Paraphrased Information
- The correct answer will not be word-for-word from the passage.
- Use Process of Elimination
- If unsure, remove clearly incorrect answers and choose the best remaining option.
