Past Progressive (When and While) GRAMMAR POINT 1 AND FUNCTION

The Past Progressive tense, also known as the Past Continuous tense, is used to describe ongoing actions that were happening at a specific time in the past or actions that were in progress for a duration in the past. It is formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb “be” (was/were) followed by the main verb with an -ing ending (gerunds) Here are some examples of how The Past Progressive tense is used:

Function:

Actions in progress in the past: “I was watching TV when she called.”

In this example, “was watching” is the Past Progressive tense. It indicates that the action of watching TV was in progress at a specific time in the past when the phone call happened.

Simultaneous actions in the past: “He was cooking dinner while she was reading a book.”

The Past Progressive tense can be used to describe two or more actions happening at the same time in the past.

Background actions: “The kids were playing in the park while their parents were having a picnic.”

Here, the Past Progressive tense is used to describe ongoing actions in the background while another action was taking place.

Interruptions in the past: “I was studying when the phone rang.”

The Past Progressive tense can be used to indicate that an action was interrupted by another event or action in the past.

Describing atmosphere or setting: “It was raining, and the wind was blowing heavily.”

In this example, the Past Progressive tense is used to describe ongoing weather conditions or the atmosphere of a specific setting in the past.
