Role Plays:
INSTRUCTIONS:
Each pair of students will receive a scenario, a mini dialogue, an audio recording of the dialogue, and an image illustration. Using these tools, students will expand the provided dialogue into a longer conversation (4-6 exchanges). After preparing, they will present their expanded dialogue to the class, using the audio and illustrations to enhance their presentation. Scenarios include winning the lottery, dream job, superpower, time travel, unlimited money, celebrity encounter, perfect vacation, dream house, perfect day, and ideal job.
Role Play 1: Missed Flight
Scenario: One student missed their flight and another is the travel agent. They discuss what could have happened if the student had not missed the flight.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Traveler): “If I hadn’t missed my flight, I would have arrived in Paris by now.”
- Student 2 (Travel Agent): “If you had arrived in Paris, what would you have done first?”
Role Play 2: Failed Exam
Scenario: One student failed an important exam and another is the friend giving advice. They discuss what could have been done differently.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Failed Student): “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.”
- Student 2 (Friend): “If you had passed the exam, how would it have changed your plans?”
Role Play 3: Lost Job Opportunity
Scenario: One student missed out on a job opportunity and another is the career counselor. They talk about what could have been done to secure the job.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Job Seeker): “If I had prepared better for the interview, I might have gotten the job.”
- Student 2 (Career Counselor): “If you had gotten the job, what would you be doing now?”
Role Play 4: Missed Birthday Party
Scenario: One student couldn’t attend a friend’s birthday party and another is the friend who hosted the party. They discuss what could have happened if they had attended.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Guest): “If I hadn’t been sick, I would have come to your birthday party.”
- Student 2 (Host): “If you had come, you would have enjoyed the surprise we had planned.”
Role Play 5: Lost Wallet
Scenario: One student lost their wallet and another is the police officer. They talk about what could have been done to prevent the loss.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Victim): “If I had kept my wallet in a safer place, I wouldn’t have lost it.”
- Student 2 (Police Officer): “If you hadn’t lost it, what would you be doing now?”
Role Play 6: Car Accident
Scenario: One student was in a car accident and another is the insurance agent. They discuss what could have been done to avoid the accident.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Driver): “If I had been more careful, I wouldn’t have had the accident.”
- Student 2 (Insurance Agent): “If you hadn’t had the accident, what would you have done this weekend?”
Role Play 7: Missed Concert
Scenario: One student missed a concert and another is their friend who went. They talk about what could have happened if they had gone together.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Absent Friend): “If I had bought the tickets earlier, I would have gone to the concert.”
- Student 2 (Attending Friend): “If you had gone, you would have seen our favorite band perform live.”
Role Play 8: Broken Promise
Scenario: One student broke a promise to meet a friend and another is the friend. They discuss what could have happened if the promise had been kept.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Promise Breaker): “If I hadn’t forgotten our meeting, I would have come.”
- Student 2 (Friend): “If you had come, we would have had a great time together.”
Role Play 9: Missed Deadline
Scenario: One student missed a project deadline and another is their teacher. They talk about what could have been done to meet the deadline.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Student): “If I had managed my time better, I would have met the deadline.”
- Student 2 (Teacher): “If you had met the deadline, your project grade would have been higher.”
Role Play 10: Cancelled Trip
Scenario: One student had to cancel a trip and another is the travel agent. They discuss what could have been done to avoid the cancellation.
Dialogues:
- Student 1 (Traveler): “If I had checked the weather forecast, I wouldn’t have planned the trip.”
- Student 2 (Travel Agent): “If you hadn’t planned the trip, you would have saved money.”

Alex (Traveler): Hi Maria, I’m really upset because I missed my flight to Paris yesterday.
Maria (Travel Agent): Oh no, Alex! I’m sorry to hear that. What happened?
Alex (Traveler): If I had left home earlier, I wouldn’t have missed the flight. There was so much traffic on the way to the airport.
Maria (Travel Agent): That’s unfortunate. If you had caught your flight, what would you have done first in Paris?
Alex (Traveler): If I had arrived in Paris on time, I would have gone straight to the Eiffel Tower. It’s been my dream to see it in person.
Maria (Travel Agent): That sounds amazing. If you had seen the Eiffel Tower, what else would you have planned for your trip?
Alex (Traveler): If I had visited the Eiffel Tower, I would have spent the next day exploring the Louvre Museum. I’ve always wanted to see the art there.
Maria (Travel Agent): It sounds like you had a wonderful trip planned. If you had seen the Louvre, what would you have done after that?
Alex (Traveler): If I had visited the Louvre, I would have taken a boat tour on the Seine River. It would have been so relaxing.
Maria (Travel Agent): I’m sure you will get another chance to do all those things. Let’s see if we can reschedule your flight so you can still enjoy your trip.
Alex (Traveler): That would be great, Maria. Thank you for your help!
